Winter is here and I’m pretty excited about it! I can honestly say that I am definitely not as excited as our golden retriever Oscar though! Here in Western New York we get a good amount of lake effect snow which turns our beautiful country landscape into a whimsical blanket of white. A shimmering, fluffy white powder that he cannot wait to go play in! Sometimes the colder temperatures, shortness of the daylight and winds can hinder us from venturing outdoors. Just like we need to remind ourselves to get outside and moving each day for our health and wellness, we need to ensure that our furry best friends get that same opportunity as well.
Here are 5 Ways to Keep Your Dog Happy & Healthy this Winter!
Plan Outdoor Time. Set aside just 20 minutes a day. Whether it’s in the morning or late afternoon after you get home from work- head outdoors for a walk. Put it in your schedule and stick to it. Bundle up, and spend a little more time playing with your dog after a “potty trip”. You’re already outside, so make it fun and exciting!
Most likely poking their faces into the snow while running and jumping around will be entertainment enough for your dog. Put your gloves on and throw some snow into the air and be playful. If your children are bundling up for some outdoor play, make it a family affair! The more the merrier! Your dog will love it!
Stimulate Their Minds. If the weather outside is frightful, and your fire is more delightful, consider purchasing a few new toys for your furry friend. A new chew toy, a squeaky toy or even practicing new tricks or commands indoors is a great way to stimulate your pet and keep them focused and their mind healthy. Sometimes we get bored indoors, and so do they.
Feed Them Good, Quality Food. Even with the efforts of increasing your pet’s winter activity, they still may not be as active as they were in the other months of the year. Providing your dog with nutritious and balanced meals each day ensures that they are getting what they need to stay healthy and not putting on extra winter weight. I feed my family food that is simple, fresh and made from natural ingredients. Our dog is a part of our family and I want to make sure he’s getting the same love in his food that I bring to our table.
Tender & True pet food is always antibiotic free and is made with sustainably sourced (GAP certified) ingredients. Their full line of USDA certified Organic dog and cat food is free of fillers, corn and soy. There are never any artificial flavors or preservatives.

Tender & True really is the Farm to Bowl superfood that your pet deserves. After all, we all want our furry friends live a long, happy & healthy life with us. They are our family too!
Create a Cozy Sleeping Place. After all of the outdoor winter fun you and your dog will be having, you’ll both want to come inside to get warm and rest. A plush, warm bed complete with a soft blanket set by the fireplace or in your family room will be a welcoming place for your furry friend. Even though they may be resting, dogs like to be in the same room with everyone and don’t want to miss a thing.
Look how happy Oscar gets when he’s on his bed!
Give Them Extra Love. Winter is the perfect time to take a few extra moments to pet and snuggle up with your dog. We’re indoors more this time of year and may have a some free time on our hands. When watching a movie at the end of a long day or laying in bed those extra few minutes on a cold and snowy weekend, reach your hand down and pet that sweet face that’s always by your side. Dogs give so much to us with their unconditional love and all they want in return is yours. Show them how special they are to you. That’s all they really need to be happy and content.
