If there is one thing my family likes to do, it is get creative in the kitchen! Whether it’s making pancakes for breakfast, helping with dinner or trying a new tasty dessert, my kiddos sure know how to put their own creative spin on things. This week my children headed back to school so we spent a few days beforehand coming up with some neat sandwiches that were delicious & works of art. Does your family create great looking masterpiece sandwiches? If so, check out the Nature’s Harvest® Sandwich Art Facebook Contest for even more fun ideas!
Nature’s Harvest® Bread is baked fresh with at least 8 grams of whole grains per serving and it comes in several different family friendly varieties. In a recent survey of moms with children ages four to 13, Nature’s Harvest learned that nearly half of moms are concerned about their children’s nutrition and that 52% consider whole grains one of the most important nutritional considerations when they purchase food at the grocery store. When looking for a great tasting bread with whole grains, Nature’s Harvest is “The easy choice for whole grains.” I love that there are no artificial flavors, colors or high-fructose corn syrup!
Creating fun sandwiches with your family is a great way to incorporate healthy foods into your child’s diet while having fun. I have found that if my children help me prepare something, or if they do it all on their own, they are more than likely going to eat all of it and with no complaining!
My little guys love the idea of a contest, so they were thrilled to get working on some special sandwiches. This year my older 2 children are in charge of preparing and packing their own lunches to teach them a little more responsibility. All of this sandwich making is giving them a lot of ideas! Nature’s Harvest Honey Wheat is on rollback for $1.97 nationwide exclusively at Walmart too so you can get a great deal for Back to School!
We wanted to make something really special, so we thought about some of the things we love. Without even hesitating, my youngest son shouted, “Tractors!” He’s so creative when it comes to making tractor drawings, I knew we could come up with something great for this sandwich.
Here’s How we made our Tractor Sandwich:
- Make a regular ham & cheese sandwich with any variety of Nature’s Harvest Bread
- Cut all of the crust off of the sandwich
- Cut a rectangle shape off of the top of your crustless sandwich leaving a taller piece as the smoke stack
- Use the crust pieces without any filling (you’ll have to trim the length) as arms for the tractor bucket and arm for the backhoe
- Use another crust piece as a tractor seat
- Use the remaining piece of sandwich (from the rectangle shape you cut out) as the bucket and the backhoe after you cut it in half
- Slice some fresh green peppers thinly and arrange as grass
- Slice some grape or cherry tomatoes and use them as wheels
- Using a circle cutter you can make the center of the sun and slice and orange to make the little triangles beams for around the sun
- Last but not least… grab a few blackberries to make this tractor come to life as smoke coming out of the tractor
We all worked together to come up with the details and this really was fun. My son… he wants this sandwich in his lunch everyday! 🙂
