A routine. Everyone has one whether they think they do or not. Some routines are more organized than others, but when it comes right down to it, everyday we follow some type of regimen. My morning routine always includes a cup of coffee first thing in the morning. A few years ago that became part of my norm and I haven’t really switched it up since. I brew my coffee, add a little half and half and sugar, then start my day. I’ve been so use to adding the cream and sugar that I don’t even think about it. Today I thought about it. Have I tried my coffee black lately?
When I was in my mid twenties, I started dabbling in the coffee world. I love anything warm and cozy, so on a chilly, overcast fall afternoon, I tried my first Café Mocha. It’s a combination of hot chocolate with a shot of espresso. It took some getting use to, but I liked it and the coffee flavor was pretty subtle. It was a warm drink to wrap my hands around to warm me up on a cold day when all of the sudden hot chocolate seemed too sweet for me. After a while, a Café seemed a bit too sweet too and I moved on to a cup of coffee on occasion…with the appropriate two creams and two sugars though. It’s the ever so popular double double if you grab your daily cup at Tim Horton’s .
It’s funny how your taste buds change. I can remember being a kid and having my father tell me, “You know someday you are probably going to like this”, as I turned my nose up to certain foods or drinks. He was right.
After our youngest child was done nursing about 3 years ago, I started brewing coffee first thing in the morning- everyday. I was now a coffee drinker! I enjoyed the lovely aroma of the coffee making it’s way through the house waking me up each day and of course a variety of pretty coffee cups too! I made a cup for me and one for my husband who still claims he doesn’t really care for coffee, but that I got him hooked. He likes way more cream and sugar than me, as I now prefer only adding just a little cream and sugar. Today I changed. I brewed my second cup of coffee this morning and I left it black. Freshly brewed, hot and actually pretty darn tasty just the way it was! I didn’t even miss the extras!
I read an article last week on Yahoo! Food about coffee that got my wheels turning. Because my family and I try hard to stay away from a lot of artificial flavorings, colors and additives in our foods, I think it changes the way things taste to us. Real foods actually taste really good and they are full of flavor! Not that cream and sugar are fake foods, but they do mask a lot of the coffee flavor, especially if you choose to have your cup of coffee with a sweet treat that’s loaded with ingredients that you can’t pronounce. It’s like all of those additives dull your taste buds.
My husband and I have re-prioritized things and have gotten back into a fitness routine. I am excited to now enjoy my morning cup of coffee afterwards without adding extra fat and calories to my diet. Maybe I can save those for dessert!
How do you take your coffee? If the way you make your morning cup of coffee has become second nature, try to switch it up a bit this week. Take a walk on the wild side and just try your coffee black. You may even surprise yourself and actually like it! 🙂
Have a great week!
