Every once in a while I feel like switching things up a bit around my home. I might be cleaning and decide to rearrange the furniture in the room, dream about adding a new piece of furniture to a certain space or sometimes keeping it simple by adding a vase to an end table with freshly cut flowers from the garden to give the room some color. I want my house to feel like a home and I think it’s important to update things and put my own personal touch into my decor.
After noticing a little clutter around my living room, I decided a shelf or some type of cabinet would really help to organize and provide a little more space for this very busy room in our house. I went to Sauder.com and started looking around. I used their Expedition Design tool that allows you to search by product, style, the type of space you have or even by collection. I had a really fun time looking for the perfect piece because there were so many great items to choose from.
After a lot of browsing, I ended up purchasing the Library Bookcase with Doors from The Harbor View Collection. This bookcase is in an Antiqued White finish, has three adjustable shelves, hidden storage behind louver detailed doors, and a sizeable drawer with a patented T-lock assembly system that features metal runners and safety stops. The enclosed back panel also has cord access if you want to place a lamp on the shelf too. My favorite detailing about the shelf is it’s solid wood knobs and turned feet. I love that this bookcase has a cottage type feel and can be used well in numerous ways.

Our bookcase only took 1 week to arrive, but my husband and I waited for a rainy afternoon to assemble this together. I was impressed at how well it was packaged especially because this was a heavy, very large box.
We sat on the living room floor and got to work. The box was easy to open and complete instructions which were very clear and helpful, along with any small pieces needed for assembly were right on top and packaged well in sealed plastic bags.
We started this little DIY project after lunch and it only took us (mostly my husband 😉 ) about an hour and a half to complete. I was even more excited when we stood up the shelf and I really got to take a good look at it. The Antiqued finish was beautiful and smooth. The bookcase shelves were heavy and sturdy and the cupboard doors were as well.
After we moved the bookcase against the wall in our living room, I began to add some personal touches. Not only was this going to look great in my living room, but it was going to be very functional too.
My 3 year old has been really into puzzles lately and even though we have a playroom, the puzzles always end up in the living room… all over the place! The cupboard of this bookcase was the perfect place to store her favorite puzzles and some of her coloring books and crayons too. They would still be handy, but out of sight, keeping my living room neat and tidy.
The easy glide drawer inside the bookcase was perfect for our TV remotes that sometimes go missing! They won’t be missing anymore. They have their own place and aren’t getting lost in couch cushions.
Since the bottom cupboard was for my children’s things, the top shelves were for me. I added my favorite rooster, a vintage suitcase where I store my DVD’s and a few knick knacks that I thought added a personal touch. I am so pleased with the way this bookcase has added character and organization to my home. What do you think?
