I hope you’ve been enjoying the beautiful fall we have been having so far. My family and I have been taking advantage of the very nice weather and getting outdoors as much as possible. As I stood under one of the large trees on our property this past weekend, I glanced up and enjoyed the fresh air and the beams of sunlight peeking through each branch of brightly colored leaves. I watched the yellow and orange leaves slowly fall down to the ground and noticed a few squirrels scattering about collecting their nuts towards the woods edge preparing for winter. Sadly that reminded me that this beautiful season of autumn will soon be over. Soon the trees will be bare and the cold, frigid air will make it’s way into our region. As the weather changes, we will also be heading into Cold & Flu Season. Just like the squirrels, it’s best to get prepared now!
Here’s 5 Natural Ways You & Your Family Can Prepare for the Upcoming Cold & Flu Season
Get Your 5 a Day. Fruits & Vegetables that is! It’s so important to give your body the vitamins and nutrients it needs to keep your immunity going strong. Don’t wait until you or a family member is sick to start. Adding just a few more colorful fruits and vegetables to your meals and snacks now can make all of the difference in a few months! Try adding a cup of your favorite berries to your yogurt for an easy and satisfying breakfast or adding a handful of spinach to your pasta for dinner!
Exercise. While the weather’s still pretty nice, get outdoors with the whole family! You don’t have to go on a long run or go to the gym to be active. Go on a nature walk or scavenger hunt with your family. You can set out to collect items from the woods like acorns and pine cones on a hike for decorating your home for the season. Go for a bike ride in the country and enjoy the Fall foliage, plant some tulip or daffodil bulbs in your garden for spring, or play catch with your family dog. All of these things keep you active and it’s so good for your mind, body and spirit.
Hydrate. Soups are a tasty way to get extra vegetables and water into your diet while making you feel warm and cozy on a chilly Fall evening. I don’t know about you, but I can easily add 2 soup meals to our menu plan this time of year and no one complains. Not even my little ones! Soup also helps curb your appetite by making you feel full longer, in turn, preventing you from overeating. Soups also really help to keep your body hydrated too. In addition to soup, add a cup of tea in the afternoon and evening too.
Rest. Make sure everyone in your family is getting enough sleep every night. I know life gets busy, but your body needs it! Make it a point to get on a normal sleep schedule. If you are adding a little more exercise to your family’s daily routine, you may even have an easier time getting to sleep. Try adding a new warm, snuggly blanket to your bed and a few drops of calming lavender oil to your evening lotion or hand cream after a warm bath. These little things can help relax you and pay off in the long run.
Be Prepared. Colds & the Flu happen. Sometimes you can take really great care of yourself and your family and someone still ends up feeling a little under the weather. Being prepared and having a few quality “Get Well Items” ready to go in your home allows you to relax and rest instead of running to the store last minute. I know when my children aren’t feeling well, the last thing I want to do when they are snuggled in their bed resting and I have a pot of homemade soup cooking on the stove is running out to the store. Take a few minutes now to prepare for that unexpected illness.
Here’s What I Always Have on Hand for Cold & Flu Season at our House:
I love Maty’s Healthy Products! Maty’s Healthy Products offers a line of 100% all natural products for the whole family that you can use everyday or when you or a family member comes down with a cold. When my children are sick, I want them to be comfortable and I want to give them the best care that I can provide. I’ve never been a huge fan of common cold medicines at the pharmacy. Most of them have ingredients that you can’t pronounce and they are packed with chemicals. When my child is fighting a cold or the flu, the last thing I want to give them is something unnatural! What goes into their little bodies is important!
I can always feel good about giving my family Maty’s Healthy Products. Each product uses powerful healing ingredients provided by Mother Nature that are safe, effective, and don’t require a doctor’s visit to access them. There are never any artificial preservatives, color additives, sweeteners, corn, dairy, wheat, soy or yeast in their products either. The whole food ingredients used in each and every Maty’s product don’t simply cover up the symptoms, but they actually enhance your body’s healing power.
Maty’s powerful and fast acting Cough Syrup for Children (now available in Organic) is made with antioxidant-rich Buckwheat Honey along with many other healthful ingredients like cinnamon, sea salt and apple cider vinegar to help your child heal and get a restful night’s sleep. I hate hearing my son or daughter coughing in the next room at night and feeling helpless. This cough syrup really helps calm a cough and I can get back to sleep myself knowing that they have started healing.
One of my very favorite products from Maty’s is their Petroleum Free Vapor Rub! When I feel the slightest sinus or congestion issue coming on, I can’t wait to open a jar of this and slowly breathe in the wonderful aromatic blend of the essential oils of Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Wintergreen in this rub. You can gently rub this on your chest, neck and even your feet after a warm bath for soothing relief from your cold or cough. The whole family can use this too! Even when I’m not sick, I enjoy taking a moment to enjoy the wonderful fragrance of this all natural rub as a midday pick me up and it leaves you feeling refreshed!
