Well, I just couldn’t wait! As soon as I could get my hands on some fresh apples, I had to make Apple Crisp. It’s one of our family’s favorite desserts and I make it several times throughout the season. Last week my daughter and I went to a beautiful, local Apple Farm and bought some fresh apples. Every year our family goes apple picking, but because the older 3 children were at school that day, I decided to just buy a 1/2 of a bushel of McIntosh apples that had already been picked to get me started on some of my favorite fall baking recipes. I love Cortland apples, so when they are ready in a few weeks our whole family will go back to do some apple picking ourselves.
To me, nothing says fall like classic, comfort food. There is something about the crisp air and the beautiful autumn colors that make me want to cook cozy meals for my family.
This warm Old Fashioned Apple Crisp will make your house smell wonderful as the buttery, oatmeal topping is baking over the apples, sugar and cinnamon.
This is a perfect weekend dessert that you can enjoy by the warmth of a cozy fire.
Of course this tastes even more delicious topped with a scoop of french vanilla ice cream. There is nothing better than spending a fall day at the apple orchard and coming home and baking with those fresh picked apples! Enjoy!

- 5 cups McIntosh or Cortland apples, peeled and sliced
- 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 cup flour

- Using a pasty blender or your Kitchen Aid Mixer with the paddle attachment, mix and combine the 1 cup flour, 3/4 cup old fashioned oats, cold butter, salt and 1/4 cup of brown sugar until it resembles course meal, or pea sized crumbles.
- Evenly spread the crumble mixture on top of the apples.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
- Serve warm with french vanilla ice cream.
- Serves 6 to 8.
